Toen het medium vhs begin jaren '80 veel succes begon te kennen, kon je niet alleen in de groezelige dorpsvideotheek films huren, maar ook in een dagbladenwinkel tot en met in een tankstation. Vooral producties met de nodige portie geweld en seks kenden een zéér groot succes bij het gemiddelde verhuurpubliek. Maar de Britse overheid vond dat er nogal weinig controle was op deze dikwijls obscure producties zodat ze besliste om deze eens gezellig te gaan keuren. Al wat deze overheidsheren niet geschikt vonden voor de 'preuts'-geachte Britse ogen werd op een zwarte lijst gebonjourd. Een groot aantal films, voornamelijk exploitation-cinema, werden afgekeurd en op de zogenaamde "Video Nasties"-lijst gezet. De Britse overheid is er uiteindelijk in geslaagd om 39 films van deze bewuste lijst te vervolgen! Deze films zijn jaren aan een stuk verboden geweest in Groot-Brittannië, tot en met de doorbraak van dvd. Want vanaf nu beginnen met mondjesmaat titels van de Video Nasties-lijst in de UK uitgebracht te worden, weliswaar nog steeds met de nodige stukken eruit geknipt. Bij ons liep het gelukkig allemaal niet zo’n vaart en waren de grote meerderheid van deze 'vieze' films vlot te verkrijgen.
